DMK 60s flashback: Then, three measures for a rupee. Now, Rs 2 a kilo. Plus a free TV

In a bid to beat Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa at her own game, the DMK today released a highly populist election manifesto, promising colour television sets to all households that did not have one and ‘quality rice’ at Rs 2 per kg through fair price shops. Smarting from her party’s debacle in the 2004 Lok Sabha election, Jayalalithaa in her manifesto a day before had offered numerous sops to the people of Tamil Nadu.

In a throwback to the 1960s when the DMK founder leader, C N Annadurai, swept to power defeating the Congress with the slogan ‘three measures of rice for Re 1,’ the DMK manifesto, displaying a desperation to return to power, said: ‘‘We will provide quality rice at Rs 2 per kilo to make women feel happy at heart.’’(more...)
